Josh,
There are a lot of females that are big "Race Day" fans and others that are video game addicts, but the focus would be the employee. More of a challenge would be getting the older, more non-computer/game friendly associates on board. However, if it was truly all about the employee and used in a way that gave them feedback and information, I bet it wouldn't take long. Even Bob, the retired cop who hates computers with the red hot passion of a thousand suns, would spark up if the unit he logged onto began with a recorded video saying,"Bob, welcome to your driver's seat, we are going to drive past tasking into your high performance experience." Already every employee logs into a bland computer for training and gets one way information. There is an intranet program providing lots and lots of informations, but very hard to filter and navigate to what is important.
How this helps with retention is not that it is a cool video game console, but rather that the employee gets near instant feedback, a way to provide feedback and be heard and a method to drive their own performance and career.
There are valuable 18yr olds in retail, heck in my store, that are staying for 2-5 years providing good to great service and having tons of potential This potential needs investment. This potential needs more transparency, two-way communication and development. Why not make it a game? Why not have coming into work be more cool than staying home?

Thaddeus, I have to say this sounds like a cool in-store idea. I have some concerns that it may be more appealing to males than females, but I have to say it sounds pretty "neat" (Hey, I guess I'm a geek!)

Let me ask - do you think this race-car/space-shuttle booth will help with the major talent problem in retail, which is retention? You know what I mean - most 18 year olds in retail aren't going to stay there anyway, right? They have so many life changes going on that it's hard to keep them in a stable state for more than a few months . . .

Would more senior employees feel this might be somewhat more for the younger crowd that has grown up playing video games?

All in all, this sounds innovate & cool - I'd love to see it in motion! :)
